Home Visits
ome visits are a service provided by The Storybook Center
as a way to observe and work with the
family in their natural environment and offer suggestions on how to
maximize the environment for everyone’s learning needs. Home visits provide
families with tools to maximize listening situations, increase potential for
language building, enhance social and communication skills, as well as other
developmental needs, as appropriate. Activities are shared and demonstrated
incorporating objects, toys, materials, and/or obstacles already in the family's home.
Home visits, which usually last 50 - 60 minutes, may be requested by parents whose
children do not currently attend the Storybook Center, as well as by those
whose children do, and who want to practice how to transfer the
activities and what their children learned in the groups into their lives at
home. Children usually spend an hour to five hours a week with us. The
majority of their time, obviously, is spent with their families and in their homes.
Carry over is extremely important in order to ensure success.
Home visits provide parents
and other family members an opportunity to ask questions and
request helpful tips in the privacy of their own home.
Home visits are popular for families of children who have at least one parent working
outside of the home and/or who have siblings who would benefit from
learning some skills to build their brother's or sister's communication
skills.
Home visits may be the sole service provided for some families. For
families who have children who have graduated from a Storybook group, or who
can no
longer fit a Storybook group into their schedule, a home visit is often a great way to
still obtain our specialized services.
