Growing a Reader
ultivating readers requires at least 20 minutes of story time a day;
exposure to many different books of different sizes, textures, and content
information; a print rich environment; good role models; and having fun
while having a read-aloud. Early literacy is an important part of our Storybook Curriculum.
Children spend only an hour to five hours a week with us. The majority
of the rest of the time is spent with their families and in their homes.
Thus, carry over is extremely important in order to ensure success. Therefore, we
designed our program - Growing A Reader - as another effective tool to support
our families' needs. We are very proud of this program.
On the first day of a child's class, families are given a
Storybook tote bag filled with a few books and suggested activities
for making reading come alive at home. Weekly or every other week,
depending on the child's age or group, the tote bags are exchanged for
different ones.
Interest is high among the families, and they are always excited to see what
they will find inside them. The tote bags make reading and sharing
opportunities easily accessible for our parents who have busy schedules
and/or want some guidance on which books are appropriate for their children
and how their family can have fun with them.
Our tote bags have become so popular that we will put
together individual ones for families who want to purchase them. Not
only are they a great way to take the guess work out
of book shopping, they are an instant recipe for family fun!
You will learn more about "Growing a Reader" when your family is enrolled
in one of our Storybook groups.
