Assessments
hildren ages one to five enrolled in most
Storybook classes receive norm-referenced, comprehensive assessments during the
first curriculum unit in which they are enrolled. Evaluations for babies under 12 months of age are available on a need
basis.
These assessments evaluate the child's language as well
as
development, and include evaluations of fine
motor skills, gross motor skills, oral skills, cognitive skills, early
literacy skills, social skills, self-help skills, and general behavior
skills.
The Storybook Center is not just child-centered; we are
family-centered. Thus, a family needs assessment is part of the
entire assessment process and is used to help establish individual learning goals
not only for each
child but for her/his family.
A summary report with
suggested objectives and goals is prepared for the family. The
results are discussed together with the assessment team. Everyone
jointly agrees upon which goals and objectives it is appropriate to focus for that particular
child and her/his family, and a Family Education Plan is
written. Once the child's individual goals and objectives have been discussed
and agreed upon, they they are implemented into the Storybook curriculum.

Center
Visits are an
important, continuing aspect of the Storybook program. During each
subsequent unit these one-on-one visits are available at the center to
families to discuss their child’s (and family's) progress in achieving the
established goals, offer suggestions, and demonstrate ways to ensure that
what is learned in Storybook classes is carried over to the home. This
information provides parents with tools to maximize their child's listening
situations, increase his potential for language building, and enhance
his social and communication skills, as well as other developmental needs.
End of Year Assessment:
For each child who attends a
full school year, a review of his
initial assessment, objectives and goals, and Family Education Plan is
conducted at the end of the year. Developmental information is
updated. Completed objectives and emerging skills are added.
Families may choose to meet to discuss the review or may request the updates
in writing. When a child re-enrolls, and if the Director feels it
necessary, a revised Family Education Plan to include new goals and
objectives may be written.
Additional or specific assessments and
reports can be requested by a family or other service provider with the
family's consent. For information regarding consultations

Daily observational records of each of our students are
maintained, and weekly, written observational summaries and updates are
often handed to parents at the end of each week.
