The Silly Sallys

- for children ages 4 - 5

he Silly Sallys Classes are for children 4 to 5 years old.  Children at this age can express ideas, enjoy discussions, and seem to endlessly ask "why?" Intellectually they should show some reasoning skills, the ability to group and classify, and should understand some basic concepts such as: numbers, colors, texture, size, position. Imagination and energy characterize the typical Silly Sally. Social play and pretend play become an important part of their play activities. They want friends and enjoy being with other children. With adult support, they try to share and take turns, and can obey simple rules in a game. Their increasing small muscle control allows them to zip and button, cut simple shapes, write crude letters, and draw simple pictures that may include people, houses, and possibly even plants and animals.

Therefore the focus of the Silly Sallys classes is to apply their imagination and energy to social play and pretend play, spatial memory skills, telling (their own) stories and further encouraging their interest in books and reading, letter/sound matches, rhyming, independence skills (tying their own shoes), enhancing both small and large motor skills, and overall kindergarten preparedness.

Each child over the age of one year who is enrolled for the school year at The Storybook Center is given an initial assessment from which a developmental profile is determined,  goals and objectives are created, and a Family Education Plan is developed. Each child's goals are implemented into our weekly, literacy-based schedule of story/circle time, peer play, pretend play, reading, brain dancing, music, art, cooking and lunch time, sensory exploration, yoga, early science and math, and discovery time.  If a child already has particular goals from another source or therapist, The Storybook Center incorporates those goals with its own goals.

Peer interaction is at the center of the learning environment.  Each child has the opportunity to explore and grow with his peers. The Storybook Center is unique in that we have an adaptable curriculum that allows us to teach to each child, within the support network of his peers and his peers' modeling.

The children in the Silly Sallys  participate in our Storybook take-home reading program, Growing a ReaderFor more information visit our Services menu or click here.

In order to maintain a high level of individual and small group educational opportunities for each child, enrollment is limited for the Silly Sallys. Sign up now!
