ids have fun with our sign language group and
our just-for-kids curriculum! Our classes are dynamic and include active participation.
The children will enjoy learning more than just individual signs.
In each lesson they will learn different games and activities to
help them build their sign vocabulary and their confidence. They will practice signing
short sentences, simple books, and familiar songs. Our group focuses on teaching
children signs and communication skills that are useful in their everyday life.
We also teach appropriate holiday signs and familiar songs. Sign up now!
Classes are designed for youth 8 years and older and require some early reading skills in order to participate.
Our classes go beyond just teaching some sign language
to students. Pairing speech with sign language creates a powerful tool to
enhance early comprehension, early communication and literacy skills.
Our Goals include:
-
Enhancing reading comprehension skills
-
Strengthening expressive reading skills
-
Assist students in building their study skills
This group will meet twice a week for
90 minutes each time, for a total of 12 classes. This unique program is
based on a minimum enrollment of four students. Sign up now!
Our curriculum was developed from the one used by the creator of Signing Exact
English, which is the same curriculum that many colleges, universities and
workshops use. Signing
Questions?
Students will learn affixes so that they can sign
prefixes and suffixes in order to sign completely accurate English
sentences. Many children
have found that they can apply their sign skills to help them in many of
their classes, especially English and later on even for their SAT prep. Part of our
lessons are devoted to practicing finger spelling. Finger spelling not
only allows them the ability to communicate any word they want, even if they
don't know the sign, but it also often helps to improve their spelling skills.
Another emphasis in the class is dramatics. Signing is much more than what we do
with our hands. It also has a lot to do with our body and facial
expressions.
Participants receive a Storybook materials packet at their first lesson,
which includes a workbook that correlates with the lessons and a pocket-size edition
of the Signing Exact English (S.E.E.) dictionary.
Children can continue to take
sign lessons even after they have completed the 12 week program. We have three
levels of vocabulary, so if a child enrolls again, he will learn new,
intermediate vocabulary and, later, advanced vocabulary. In the
cases where there are large age gaps between students, learning groups and
centers are used to meet the needs of each participant.
